WHAT IS MONTESSORI?

Smiling girl in blue uniform with glasses, seated, holding art project, surrounded by children

In the early 20th Century an Italian physician, Dr. Maria Montessori, gave the world a new approach to educate children. Through Dr. Montessori’s observations she was able to examine the benefits of children learning from their peers, environment, and very little help from teachers. Dr. Montessori was able to witness the excitement of students who were able to learn independently with little direction from a teacher.

Based on her observations Dr. Montessori was able to conclude the development of children is natural. Children instinctively want to be independent. A teacher may introduce and demonstrate new knowledge and materials, but children naturally desire to learn. In a Montessori the teacher is a guide or a resource, but not the source.

Dr. Montessori shared her data and experiences with others and today there are thousands of Montessori schools across the world. The uncanny knowledge and leadership of Montessorians has lead Montessori schools to be called the “school of entrepreneurs”.

Today, many Montessori schools are known to help develop brilliant self-sufficient students. Montessori student are well rounded knowing more than just reading and writing. Their knowledge expands well beyond a standard classroom. Montessorians learn about various cultures, social justice, and their value as humans to make a better world.

Montessori schools hold high standards, allowing ours students to understand the importance of education and their place in the world. The Montessori education allows learning to be fluid and fun. Montessori encourage students to be curious and ask questions to gain a deeper understanding. Students enjoy learning through doing, experiencing, and creating. Students develop cognitively, socially, physically and emotionally. The study of core subjects, other cultures, language, and commitment to service creates productive young people who become future productive citizens in our community.

Benefits of Montessori

Each student is treated as an individual

Every student is an individual. This includes styles of learning and the rate of development. Students don’t have to keep up with or wait on others. Students are allowed to learn at their own pace.

Students are taught independence and leadership

Through classes and routines students are taught how to care for oneself and lead for others when necessary.

Students are allowed to choose learning activities

As an extension to each child’s independence, they are not “made” to do any particular activity in class. Students are allowed to choose activities they are drawn to do.

Students look for knowledge

Classrooms are designed for students to learn and seek more information. They are able to use materials in the classroom to answer their own questions and therefore satisfy their own curiosity.
